The BMW M5 is a very emblematic model for the BMW brand for being one of the first high-performance sedans to be launched on the market and later joined by rivals such as the Mercedes E-Class AMG, Audi RS6 or more recently the Porsche Panamera.
For several generations the BMW M5 has remained one of the fastest cars in its category, not only for its power and speed, but also for its very sporty dynamic behavior. Among the great virtues of the BMW M5 is its versatility. For performance and dynamism is a true sports car, but its sedan body is also practical and allows travel with good levels of comfort to its passengers and luggage.
The BMW M5 is powered by a 4.4-liter V8 engine with two turbochargers that generate 600 hp (635 in the case of the CS) and 750 Nm of torque that remains constant between 1,800 and almost 6,000 rpm. Thanks to this constant torque delivery, the BMW M5’s acceleration and recuperation are exceptional. Its direct gasoline injection system and gas treatment manage to keep emissions and consumption in reasonable figures for its performance, although they are still high in absolute value.

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports sedan category. Most M5s have been produced in the sedan (saloon) body style, but in some countries the M5 was also available as a wagon (estate) from 1992 to 1995 and from 2006 to 2010.
The first M5 model was hand-built in 1985 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified M1 engine that made it the fastest production sedan of the era. M5 models have been produced for each generation of the 5 Series since 1985.
It was the product of demand for a car with the cargo capacity of a sedan, but with the performance of a sports car. It used the chassis of the 535i and an evolution of the BMW M1 engine. It was hand-built by Motorsport technicians and was launched as the world’s fastest production sedan.
The LHD, RHD Euro Spec M5 and ZA spec M5 had an M88/3 engine delivering 286 hp (282 HP; 210 kW) (DIN), while the 1988 North American model version was equipped with a catalytic converter that reduced power output to 260 hp (256 HP; 191 kW) (DIN). Approximately 1200 units were imported to the United States.
